LASO delivers heavy transformers for Mozal plant upgrade
LASO Transportes’ Mozambique unit recently completed a critical project involving the import and transport of two massive power transformers. Each transformer weighed a significant 122 tonnes and will play a crucial role in enhancing the operational efficiency of the Mozal plant. The project also encompassed the transport of a 6-meter-tall rectifier transformer.
The transformers arrived in Maputo, where LASO coordinated their unloading and meticulous preparation for onward transport. The project’s primary challenge stemmed from the condition of the roads, bridge restrictions, and access limitations within the city. To overcome these obstacles, LASO Mozambique meticulously planned the logistics and employed specialized equipment, such as axle lines, to guarantee the transformers’ safety throughout the journey.
Collaboration with various partners proved instrumental to the project’s success. LASO Mozambique worked closely with Mozal, MzBetar, EDM (Electricity of Mozambique), Revimo, Trac, ANE, Maputo City Council, Xenith Media, DP World, and UPF.
Large-scale transportation of heavy cargo presents a multitude of logistical challenges. This specific operation necessitated the temporary removal of traffic signals and the creation of a detailed route plan to ensure safe passage across designated roads and bridges.

“Carrying out this transport was a significant challenge due to the size of the transformers and the road restrictions involved. The cooperation between the Mozambique subsidiary and the partners was essential to the project’s success” says LASO.
