Pune: Major Power Transformer Failure in Chakan, Disruption In Power Supply To MIDC And Residential Areas
Pune, 2nd June 2023: A power transformer with a capacity of 50 MVA in the 400 kV ultra-high voltage substation of the Chakan transmission system has been damaged, leading to an outage of approximately 10 to 15 megawatts of power supply. As a result, the power distribution company is making efforts to manage the situation. However, due to the high demand for electricity, there is a possibility of imposing regulated power supply on certain distribution lines in Chakan.
According to the information available, each of the three power transformers in the 400 kV substation in Chakan has a capacity of 50 MVA. Out of these, one transformer experienced a breakdown after midnight on Thursday (June 1). Upon inspection, it was found that the transformer was completely damaged. Subsequently, the installation of a new power transformer from the transmission company has commenced. However, it is expected to take until Tuesday (June 6) to complete the work.
Meanwhile, the power consumption on two affected power transformers in the substation has been transferred to an alternate transformer. Currently, there is an increased demand for electricity, and the distribution company has initiated regulated supply of 10 to 15 megawatts to manage the load. However, if the demand continues to exceed the supply capacity, it will be necessary to implement regulated power supply on certain distribution lines in Nanekarwadi, Kuruli, MIDC, Sara City, Force Motors, Chimbali, Alandi Phata, and Khadkale. These 22 kV distribution lines serve a total of 3,924 customers, including residential, commercial, and industrial consumers. To address the power regulation requirements, the electricity company has called for cooperation from the concerned electricity consumers.
In Chakan city and surrounding areas, around 46,000 customers have experienced power outages due to the heavy pre-monsoon rainfall accompanied by strong winds on Thursday evening (June 1). As a result of these intense weather conditions, large hoardings’ flex boards got entangled with several power transmission lines, leading to the disruption of power supply to approximately 46,000 customers in Chakan city and MIDC area. Specifically, it was observed that 90% of customers faced power disruption due to hoardings’ flex boards, while 10% experienced a major breakdown due to fallen trees and damaged transmission equipment. After evening, the electricity company started removing the flex boards from the power transmission lines and began restoring power supply to the affected consumers. By Friday morning (June 2), power supply was restored to all customers. However, the fallen flex boards on the transmission lines caused a momentary interruption for residential, commercial, and industrial electricity consumers in Chakan.
