Magnolia Project Offers County's First Pantry with Onsite Healthy Cooking Classes

After nearly two years of hard work and much anticipation by South Bay residents facing food insecurity, Magnolia Project 1:1 The People's Choice Pantry celebrated its grand opening at 633 9th Street, Imperial Beach. A ribbon-cutting ceremony kicked off the morning's festivities, with Chairwoman Nora Vargas, County Supervisor, First District; Imperial Beach Mayor Paloma Aguirre; Imperial Beach Councilmember Carol Seabury; and other community leaders and supporters in attendance to commemorate this victory for South Bay.

In addition to a client-choice pantry, Magnolia Project—supported by CVS Health—features Maggie's Table, a healthy cooking program sponsored by UCSD and the San Diego County District Attorney's office. The eight-week program is led by professional chefs/nutritionists and serves up simple, healthy, easy-to-learn recipes and tips to promote health and wellness.

"We’re the first people's choice pantry to offer nutritional instruction and healthy cooking classes at the same location, and we can't wait to welcome our residents in need," said Co-founder and Executive Director Regina Gamboa. "Clients must call to schedule an appointment, and they can receive groceries either by shopping at our storefront or curbside pick-up," Gamboa added.

"Equitable access to food is one of the greatest barriers to better health and well-being for many people," said Verne Brizendine, chief executive officer, Aetna Better Health of California, a CVS Health company. "Over the past four years, we have proudly granted more than $50,000 to support Project 1:1 and their tireless, compassionate efforts to increase access to healthier food and relieve food insecurities that many San Diegans face."

The uniquely designed pantry offers a warm country-store atmosphere with bins of fresh local produce and bread, shelves filled with canned products and other shelf-stable food, plus toiletries and paper goods—including diapers and feminine products. Magnolia is also the only local pantry that has an "International Shelf" featuring an assortment of Latin, Asian, Middle Eastern, and Kosher products to serve its diverse residents. Clients can self-select nutritious, culturally appropriate foods they prefer for their families.

Magnolia Project is open Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday from 12 - 4 p.m. Call for an appointment at (619) 770-6000. To sign up for "Making Healthy Food Together" cooking classes, reserve your spot at [email protected], or call (619) 777-6723.
