G.I. Joe Producer Debunks Fan Theory About John Cena’s Transformers Character

Jun 30, 2023

Lorenzo di Bonaventura, producer of G.I. Joe and Transformers shuts down one of the biggest fan theories.

The universes of G.I. Joe and Transformers have a lot in common, especially when it comes to action figures. However, fans have tried to find many more connections over the years in the movies and series of both franchises, leading to a number of interesting theories.

One of them, perhaps the most popular, maintains that John Cena's character who appears in 2018's Bumblebee is actually Duke, one of the most popular action heroes in the G.I. Joe saga. Despite the fact that the character appears under the name of Jack Burns, many were convinced that they knew his true identity.

With Transformers: Rise of the Beasts approaching its premiere, the theories resurfaced but also the possibilities of debunking them. In an exclusive interview with Screen Rant, producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura confirmed whether or not the fans were right:

"I can deny that, but I could see why you'd feel that because he does have some of that energy if you would. I'd love to work with John again. He's fantastic, and hopefully, we can bring him back into the series."

Bringing Cena back for the future of the franchise would be a great idea, especially considering the great moment the actor is going through in his career, especially after The Suicide Squad, being the only one that had its own spinoff.

In fact, Peacemaker will have a second season at some point, although for now it is not a priority for Warner Bros. Discovery and DC, considering the many changes they are going through. So fans might have big chances of seeing him again in the Transformers or G.I. Joe universes before he can get suited up again as Christopher Smith.

This is something that fans have been waiting to see for a long time. Considering that both franchises belong to Paramount Pictures thanks to their deal with Hasbro, it's a surprise that it hasn't happened yet.

But now there is new hope. After Bumblebee rebooted the Transformers universe, a new story begins to unfold with Rise of the Beasts and if the numbers hold up, there's no doubt Hasbro and Paramount will want to extend the success to G.I Joe as well, with the last movie release being the less than positively received Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins from 2021.

For now, the only thing confirmed is di Bonaventura's intentions to unite the two universes at some point, so fans will simply have to wait for it to happen.

Transformers: Rise of the Beasts is set in the 1990's and will find the Autobots and Decepticons battling each other on Earth, with humans stock in the middle of the war.

The movie stars Anthony Ramos and Dominique Fishback as the main humans, with Ron Perlman as Optimus Primal, Michelle Yeoh as Maximal Airazor, Pete Davidson as Autobot Mirage, and Peter Dinklage as Scourge.
